Parents say teen's suicide caused by video

SAN DIEGO (AP) — A San Diego couple is blaming a school district for their son's death, claiming the 14-year-old killed himself after an embarrassing video went viral.

Parents of Matthew Burdette say in a claim that he was "mercilessly bullied, harassed and teased" after a video of him apparently masturbating in a school bathroom was taken by a classmate and posted online.

Matthew killed himself last November.

KGTV-TV ( ) says the parents filed a $1 million claim against San Diego Unified School District. Timothy and Barbara Burdette contend at least one district employee knew about the bullying but did nothing to stop it.

In an email to the TV station, the school district denies knowing about the video. It says privacy laws prevent it from discussing the circumstances of the boy's death.
