OCEANSIDE, Calif. (AP) — Authorities say an Oceanside police officer has shot and killed a man he believed was reaching for a gun.
Police say an officer was called to the harbor area shortly after 9 a.m. Monday to check on a man sleeping on a bench.
Police say when the officer arrived he saw that the man had a gun in his waistband.
According to authorities, the officer ordered the man to show his hands but instead he appeared to be reaching for the gun and the officer opened fire, striking him at least three times.
The man didn't fire his gun. He died at a hospital. Police say he was in his 20s but his name wasn't immediately released.
