CHICAGO (AP) — A 71-year-old man arrested in California in connection with the 1992 strangling death of an Illinois teenager won't fight extradition to Illinois.
Cook County authorities say Robert Serritella was arrested this week in Los Angeles County and appeared in court there Thursday. Another hearing is set for Aug. 25.
The mother of 15-year-old victim David Chereck tells the Chicago Sun-Times she got a Wednesday call from Cook County investigators. Esther Chereck says she was relieved to hear the news about the arrest of a suspect.
David Chereck was last seen walking home from a bowling alley in suburban Chicago on New Year's Day 1992. His body was later found in a forest preserve.
Serritella is in custody in Los Angeles County. It wasn't immediately clear if he has an attorney.
