SANTA ANA, Calif. (AP) — Three decades after an 84-year-old woman was sexually assaulted and beaten to death outside her home in Anaheim, a man has been convicted of killing her.
The Orange County Register reports (http://bit.ly/1lQFYz6) a jury on Thursday found 60-year-old Richard S. Sandoval guilty of first-degree murder. Jurors also found the 1984 murder of Margaret Lenney was committed during a rape or attempted rape, which makes Sandoval eligible for a sentence of life in prison without parole.
Prosecutors say Lenney had fired Sandoval for shoddy painting work he'd done at her home.
Sandoval was a suspect from the first day of the investigation, but prosecutors didn't think they had enough evidence to charge him until a DNA match decades later.
He is scheduled for sentencing in August.
