LOS ANGELES (AP) — A fresh wave of grief is sweeping across the Los Angeles Police Department, where four officers have been killed in traffic accidents over the past two months.
The latest casualty was Det. Ernest Allen, a department veteran who was off duty Friday when a cement truck smashed into the pickup truck he was riding in.
Allen was killed on the same street where the first of the four officers was killed, on March 7.
The Los Angeles Times reports (http://lat.ms/1gb09w4 ) that the deaths have cast a pall over the LAPD.
A department spokesman, Cmdr. Andrew Smith, tells the paper that "a feeling of depression" has descended at headquarters and police stations.
