LOS ANGELES (AP) — A wild early morning chase through Los Angeles that began with two men in an SUV firing on pursuing police ended several hours later with one suspect dead, another arrested, and a SWAT officer wounded.
Police were sifting through at least three crime scenes near downtown and in South Los Angeles, including one that prompted the shutdown of four lanes of Interstate 110.
A 19-year-old suspect was discovered hiding in a trash bin and was arrested by SWAT officers.
A short time later, more gunfire broke out when a 37-year-old man engaged officers with a rifle, an assault-style weapon with a pistol grip and an illegal high-volume drum magazine.
Deputy Chief Bob Green said one SWAT officer was struck and suffered a "significant leg wound."
The 37-year-old suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.
The suspects were not immediately identified.
