LOS ANGELES (AP) — A Los Angeles police officer has been killed in a hit-and-run crash with an SUV.
It's the third death of an LAPD officer in the line of duty in recent months. An officer was killed in March when his patrol car was hit by a dump truck. Last month, a motorcycle officer was struck and killed by a driver alleged to have been under the influence of cocaine.
Authorities say Saturday morning's accident occurred in the Harbor City area. An SUV made a U-turn and slammed into the patrol car driven by Roberto Sanchez.
Sanchez, a six-year veteran of the department, died at the hospital. His partner was seriously injured and called for help on his personal cellphone.
The driver fled the scene. Police later detained a "person of interest."
