OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Authorities say a veteran Oakland firefighter hospitalized with life-threatening injuries after his fire truck rolled over during a drill is awake and breathing on his own.
City spokesman Sean Maher says Mitchell Ow remains in critical condition Wednesday a day after the rig he was driving rolled over at the Oakland International Airport.
Ow was participating in a monthly simulated red-alert drill to test emergency response time to incidents at the airport. The rig is equipped to carry 3,000 gallons of water and 420 gallons of foam.
Fire Chief Teresa Deloach Reed said Tuesday that Ow has been with the department for 28 years and is a well -respected colleague. She says it is unclear how fast Ow was driving at the time of the accident.
The incident remains under investigation.
