GRAND TERRACE, Calif. (AP) — A stretch of freeway in San Bernardino County will be closed overnight as crews swing into place a massive railroad bridge span.
The Riverside Press-Enterprise says (http://bit.ly/1dXW24W) the million-pound span has been inching along Interstate 215 and now rests along the east shoulder in Grand Terrace.
The interstate will be completely closed Friday at 11:30 p.m. as it is installed using four 12-ton gantries to replace the existing bridge.
Crews hope to have the job done by 11:30 a.m. Saturday.
Officials with the state Department of Transportation are urging motorists to avoid the area.
Another full freeway closure is scheduled for Saturday night and Sunday morning, but may not be necessary.
The bridge installation is part of a $170 million project to add a carpool lane in each direction along a 7.5-mile stretch of the interstate.
