SANTA ANA, Calif. (AP) — A former physical education teacher convicted of the molestation of 17 children has been released from a California mental hospital after 16 years over the objections of Orange County prosecutors who believe he remains dangerous.
The district attorney's office says 66-year-old Alan Rigby was freed from Coalinga State Hospital at 1:30 p.m. Monday.
A judge last week ordered Rigby released, saying he's unlikely to reoffend.
Authorities say Rigby plans to live with his sister in Pennsylvania, Michigan or New York.
Rigby was convicted of molesting boys and girls from 1985 to 1987 while teaching PE at Harbor Day School in Newport Beach. His victims ranged from 10 to 14 years old.
Rigby was sent to the state hospital after serving half of a 19-year prison sentence.
