IRVINE, Calif. (AP) — A $5 million donation from an Orange County couple will go toward clinical trials at the cancer center at the University of California, Irvine.
The Orange County Register reported Thursday (http://bit.ly/1dYj8Xr ) that the Sue and Ralph Stern Center for Cancer Clinical Trials and Research will focus on patients with advanced-stage or treatment-resistant diseases.
University officials say the center will help UC Irvine meet a goal that cancer patients never have to leave Orange County to receive treatment.
The funding also will help support the research of the center's new director, Dr. Richard Van Etten, who was appointed in October.
Van Etten called the gift from the Sterns "transformational."
UC Irvine successfully treated Sue Stern for a spinal cord tumor in 2008. Since then, she and her husband have made several donations to the university's health system.
