SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — One person is dead and another is hospitalized after being hit by a Caltrain in Santa Clara. Caltrain says the cause of the incident last evening at the Santa Clara Station is under investigation. The Mercury News reports that both were men, and the injured man has serious injuries but is expected to survive.
BURBANK, Calif. (AP) — Police have arrested a Southern California man on suspicion of killing his 76-year-old mother and dumping her body in an alley. Burbank police tell City News Service that the woman's body was wrapped in some sort of material and dumped in a trash bin. Her name wasn't released but police say 40-year-old Moises Diaz was arrested.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — A trial is set to open today for a former bank executive who sued the city of Los Angeles and two police officers, claiming they beat him during a bizarre incident two years ago. Brian Mulligan is seeking $20 million in damages in a federal lawsuit, claiming he was beaten in May 2012 by two officers who drove him to a nearby motel where he was told to stay until morning. Officers say he admitted ingesting so-called bath salts. Mulligan claims that when he tried to leave the room, officers severely beat him.
SANTA ANA, Calif. (AP) — Orange County has paid nearly $730,000 to a woman who accused deputies of hauling her out of her house, slamming her face into the ground and seizing her children after she refused to come outside voluntarily. The Orange County Register says the county paid Nancy Butano last week to settle her civil rights lawsuit.
