HAWAIIAN GARDENS, Calif. (AP) — A man suspected of shooting his estranged girlfriend has been taken into custody following a roughly eight-hour standoff with a Los Angeles County sheriff's SWAT team.
The sheriff's department said the standoff with 33-year-old Alfredo Lopez Jr. began Saturday morning after deputies chased him to a strip mall in Hawaiian Gardens and he refused to come out of his pickup truck.
Lopez was suspected of shooting the mother of his two children six times in Riverside. He allegedly fled after driving her to a hospital.
Authorities said Lopez was armed and refused to surrender for hours. Authorities shot tear gas into the truck and deployed a K-9 unit before he stumbled out of the vehicle.
The Riverside Press-Enterprise reports (http://bit.ly/1fPDin5) his estranged girlfriend is expected to survive her injuries.
