GREENFIELD, Calif. (AP) — Authorities say 70 dogs and cats infested with fleas were found in a Northern California house filled with feces, urine and cockroaches.
The Monterey Herald reports (http://bit.ly/1mOBObT) that police officers in Greenfield discovered the filthy conditions when they served a search warrant at the house Wednesday.
Officials declared the house uninhabitable and rescued most of the pets.
Animal rescuers said that in all, seven dogs and 63 cats were in the house. More than a dozen of the sickest pets were euthanized.
One person was arrested in connection with the pending warrant, but police said it was not related to the pet hoarding. Social workers were investigating whether a child was also living in the house.
The Monterey County District Attorney's office will consider whether to file animal abuse charges.
