LOS ANGELES (AP) — Red flag warnings for fire danger are posted in Los Angeles and Ventura counties as dry and gusty Santa Ana winds blow through the region. The National Weather Service says gusts up to 55 mph are possible this morning and with low humidity will remain widespread. Wind advisories are expected to be lifted by midday.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — The grandparents of an 8-year-old boy whose battering death led to a review of LA County's child welfare system have filed a wrongful-death lawsuit, saying officials missed repeated opportunities to save the child. The LA Times reports the suit claims wrongful death and civil rights violations, and seeks unspecified damages.
PALMDALE, Calif. (AP) — A Palmdale man has been arrested on charges that he assaulted his girlfriend and held her against her will for 10 days in his apartment. The Daily News of Los Angeles reports 19-year-old Giovanni McKinnis is being held on $1 million bail and is scheduled to be arraigned tomorrow. Police say the victim's mother saw the assault and kidnapping but didn't call police because she feared McKinnis.
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A California appeals court has upheld San Francisco's ban on single-use plastic bags that can serve as a precedent for other cases. The San Francisco Chronicle reports the court published its ruling Friday as precedent binding on lower courts. Similar measures have been adopted in about 50 cities and counties in California and have survived legal challenges.
